See a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Online with Hometown NP

Every clinician at Hometown NP is a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. That is the heart of our practice. Our providers meet with adults by video to listen, evaluate, and help shape a treatment plan that makes sense for their lives.

What a psychiatric nurse practitioner does

A psychiatric nurse practitioner, or PMHNP, is a registered nurse who has completed graduate education and earned board certification in psychiatric mental health care. Depending on state law, PMHNPs can assess symptoms, diagnose mental health conditions, order relevant tests, and manage medications. Some states require them to work in collaboration with a physician, and our clinicians follow the rules of each state where they practice.

It also helps to know what we are not. A psychiatrist is a physician who attended medical school and completed a psychiatry residency. Hometown NP does not employ psychiatrists or offer physician visits. If your situation calls for a psychiatrist, we will tell you honestly and help you think through where to turn.

How we work with you

We see people for concerns like anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and sleep troubles. Your first visit is a longer conversation about your history and goals. Follow-up visits check in on how you are feeling, any side effects, and whether the plan still fits. Medication is one possible part of care, decided together after evaluation, never automatic.

With your permission, we can coordinate with your primary care clinician or therapist so everyone supporting you stays on the same page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my nurse practitioner is qualified?

Each provider profile on our site lists their credentials and licensed states. You can also look up any nurse practitioner license through your state board of nursing.

Can I switch to a different nurse practitioner?

Yes. Feeling comfortable with your clinician matters. Let our team know, and we will look at other providers licensed in your state.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Have a list of current medications, any past diagnoses, your insurance card if you are using insurance, and a few notes about what you would like help with.

Do you see children or teenagers?

Our practice focuses on adults. If you are looking for care for a child or teenager, your pediatrician or school counselor can often point you toward a clinician who specializes in younger patients and families.
