Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Treatment Online
PTSD is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.
Hometown NP provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management via telehealth.
By the Numbers
About 6% of the US population will develop PTSD at some point in their lives. PTSD affects approximately 12 million US adults in any given year.
Anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event can develop PTSD. Veterans, first responders, survivors of abuse, and women (who develop PTSD at twice the rate of men) are among the most affected populations.
When to seek help
Seek help if trauma-related symptoms have persisted for more than one month, are interfering with your relationships or work, or include any thoughts of self-harm.
Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder develops when the brain's normal processing of a traumatic event becomes stuck, leaving the nervous system in a state of persistent alarm. Trauma can be a single event (an accident, assault, or natural disaster) or chronic (ongoing abuse, combat exposure, or medical trauma). PTSD affects not just memory but the body — many people experience physical symptoms like a racing heart, startle responses, and physical tension as their nervous system relives past threats.
PTSD symptoms fall into four clusters: intrusion symptoms (flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts), avoidance (avoiding trauma reminders, emotional numbing), negative alterations in cognition and mood (shame, guilt, estrangement from others, persistent negative emotions), and hyperarousal (hypervigilance, irritability, difficulty sleeping, exaggerated startle). Symptoms vary greatly between individuals.
Effective PTSD treatment includes trauma-focused psychotherapy (particularly Trauma-Focused CBT and EMDR) and medication management. SSRIs (sertraline, paroxetine) and SNRIs are FDA-approved for PTSD. Prazosin is commonly used for nightmare reduction. Our PMHNPs take a trauma-informed approach to all care — ensuring appointments feel safe, paced appropriately, and non-retraumatizing.

How PTSD Is Diagnosed at Hometown NP
PTSD assessment uses structured clinical interviews and standardized rating scales such as the PCL-5 (PTSD Checklist for DSM-5). Your Hometown NP PMHNP will carefully and sensitively explore your trauma history and current symptoms, screen for co-occurring depression, substance use, and anxiety, and assess for any safety concerns. Trauma-informed care principles guide every aspect of the evaluation — you are never required to share more than you are comfortable with.
